Product Description
Equine ER explores the power of the human-horse connection, through the lens of the esteemed hospital, located in the horse-crazy Bluegrass, birthplace of greats like Man o' War. At the hospital, a core of iconoclastic doctors perform cutting-edge medicine on their four-footed patients, whether it is an experimental drug on a mare dying of pleural pneumonia, or brain surgery on a foal kicked in the head. The book follows the emotional journeys that doctors and owners embark on when a beloved horse becomes ill. It is proof that what horse trainer, poet, and writer Vicki Hearne once said is true: In over 25 years of training, I have never seen an animal who was replaceable. |

If you have ever loved anything with four feet November 17, 2009 Novel Nine Book Club Member 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This book is for anyone who has loved a four footed creature. It is a look at the complex world of people who love their animals and those who dedicate their lives to taking care of them. It is an ideal gift for the young adult reader who adores horses or is considering a career as a vet.
Every horse lover should read this book November 6, 2009 Marilyn J. Ranson (Elk Grove, CA United States) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This book highlights the hard work and dedication of the vets in this famous equine hospital. The stories are sometimes heart breaking and sometimes just amazing. Throughout the book, Leslie Guttman writes like an experienced horsewoman -- every description rings true to the sport. Most amazing is her intuitive answers to this reader's questions. For example, in one story a young women goes to incredible lengths to save her horse. Just when I was thinking "How could anyone afford this?" Guttman answers my question in detail, including the actual cost. Each case is described in detail, similar to the case histories in Equus magazine. This is a book to buy and keep on your bookshelf. I only wish it had been longer.
Equine ER October 31, 2009 Betty M. Williams (Vermont) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This book was even more interesting to me because I had the privilege of visiting Rood and Riddle Veterinary Clinic in 2003 during a trip to Lexington. This facility is surely one of a kind, and the excitement, drama, and hard work that goes on there is captured by Leslie Guttman in Equine ER. My family has always lived with horses, but the stories in this book can be related to by anyone who loves animals or people. Each chapter is unique and suspenseful.
Great Read August 5, 2009 Marilyn Moosnick I don't usually read books or articles about the horse world, but this book really drew me in. It is so well written that the stories about the doctors and the horses completely engage you. I would suggest this book to anyone interested in human as well as horse frailities.
A horse book that captivated a non-horse person August 4, 2009 Shawn (New York City) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Up until reading this book my only experience with horses were watching this year's Kentucky Derby (hadn't intended to, but ended up at my girlfriend's friend's brother's party for it) and an unexplainable affinity for action movies with medieval horse-back fight scenes. I had no idea what went on behind the scenes of the horse world and never thought twice about it. This book quickly grabbed me and pulled me in, opening up this world for me. It was easy to read with great explanations of terminology that allowed me to keep up with the stories instead of having to google my way through it. The balance of the story telling between the vets, clients and horses was wonderfully done. Some of my favourite parts of the book were in the way the author described horses and people; her use of imagery just amazing!
As a horse neophyte I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I highly recommend it.
