Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
Small Animal Clinical Pharmacology is a practical, clinically-oriented pharmacology text designed to provide the veterinary student and practitioner with all the relevant information needed when designing drug treatment regimens for pets in small animal veterinary practice. Comprehensively updated and revised, the second edition of this core text covers essential new information on drugs used in the management of a range of presenting conditions including heart disease and cardiac arrhythmias. For the second edition new authors, superb new illustrations and a second colour have all been introduced. With its unique approach combining a thorough understanding of the pharmacological action of drugs with a basic understanding of the relevant physiology and pathophysiology of systems and tissues affected, Small Animal Clinical Pharmacology continues to be an indispensable book for all veterinary students and practitioners.

  • Organised by drug class in a uniform and detailed structure which means it is easy to locate key information on dose rates, routes of administration, drug interactions and special considerations at a glance

  • Key chapters based around treatment of disorders of particular body systems, eg cardiovascular and thyroid disorders

  • Essential introductory chapters covering pharmacokinetics, general pharmacological principles and adverse reactions for a thorough basic grounding in the subject

  • All authors are experienced clinicians and recognised experts in their field who bring a down to earth and practical approach to the text

Customer Reviews:
5 out of 5 stars Practical, Great read, Good reference, Excellent for vets in general practice   March 16, 2009

The first edition saw me through veterinary school but having obtained a copy of the second edition has prompted me to re-read. Not only does it provide an excellent review of veterinary pharmaceuticals, it also relates them nicely back to physiology so it is a fantastic review of many of the principles of internal medicine as an added bonus (painless too!).

As a general practitioner I especially appreciated the chapter on adverse drug reactions, which alerted me to a few common ADRs I was not familiar with. I also enjoyed the comprehensive chapter on antiparasitic drugs as these are so common in practice and reading labels just doesn't cut it when clients ask detailed questions about interactions, efficacy, resistance and all those things clients want to know. Each page held a new discovery. eg I did not know that piperonyl butoxide antagonises the antiparasitic action of fipronil...but when clients feel one isn't working they add the other then feel doubly frustrated when they get nowhere. The tables in this chapter in particular are exceptional references and will save one from sifting through I don't-know-how-many journals to get the answer!

Its a very practical book in that respect, which is great for busy vets.
It provides a friendly review of the principles of pharmacology and chapters on everything from chemotherapy to drugs and reproduction and ocular clinical pharmacology, and dose rates and extensive tables are provided throughout.

One of the nicest things is that detailed info on adverse effects are provided, even if only one or two reports exist, allowing clinicians to make the most informed decisions. Obviously this is a terrific text for vet students but I think most working vets will find this a very practical, non-threatening review of the agents they work with on a daily basis. Aside from reading it cover to cover (not an honour I confer on many textbooks and quite an unexpected thrill) its something I'll continue to refer to daily.

5 out of 5 stars Essential Practice Resource   February 12, 2009

I can't recommend this book highly enough not only for students but all general practitioners and locums. Armed with this book- SCAP, "The 5 minute Consult" and the "BSAVA Drug Formulary", there would be very few conditions or concerns that could not be queried and resolved by the information contained within those 3 books. I now have space on my crowed bookshelf as so many other books have been replaced by the above triad
SACP 2nd edition not only delivers the vision of the author to be clinically appropriate but because the information is presented in such a crisp clear and scientifically rigorous manner, the author also ignites a curiosity in the reader about matters pharmacological which draws the vets back to read more and expand their knowledge generally.

This book is an excellent and practical clinical reference and should be on every practice bookshelf. Mine was so good someone stole it and I had to purchase another one.
